Well today we were busily involved in programming the Proloquo2Go with directives that our imaginary student Johnny would use as he traveled around his house, school, community and hospital. During our presentation of Johnny's milieu and background information we became aware that some of our directives such as "I want" and I would like to" could be improved upon by also including more empathetic phrases such as "Hey I really want to" or "O.K. it's time to" to give Johnny the opportunity to have a voice similar to that of his peers. It became aware to us that many cells could be added to each layer of Proloquo2Go to give Johnny a wide variety of choices to make in each particular environment that Johnny finds himself in. A nice feature of Proloquo2Go is that these extra cells can be added quite quickly and easily as they are required. I found the settings feature of the iPod to be very easy to use and it was quick to change the icon size to best fit the needs of each student. As Johnny had some visual difficulties we decided on the very large icon setting.
This activity we participated in today was extremely advantageous in giving us an opportunity to visualize how a nonverbal student might use the Proloquo2Go in not only their school life, but also in their home and community environments. The iPod, being such a small device, would not only be extremely portable, but also would be viewed by their peers as "cool". This is particularly important for the success of Proloquo2Go being utilized by nonverbal students and having a successful acceptance of this assistive technology would ensure its future use.
