Today in class we discussed social stories and how they are used to teach social skills to students who have difficulties demonstrating appropriate responses to social situations. They are used to help the student ease anxiety in social settings. teach routines, how to do an activity, how to ask for help and/or how to respond appropriately to situations.
Social Story involves:
1. where situation occurs
2. who is involved
3. what they are doing
4. reflects on the situation
It is easy to see how social stories are beneficial to both autistic students and their teachers. The amount of time saved by the teacher who would otherwise have to reteach and reteach an appropriate behavior is tremendous. Equally the amount of stress that an autistic student has to endure while participating in certain social situations is dramatically reduced when using social stories. Social stories provide the autistic student with reminders to behave in appropriate ways and serve to keep the student focused on the task at hand.
In class today we learned how to use the iPod Nano to capture video, convert the mP4 video to .mov in Prism Video Convertor and import it to iMovie. My group, Kathy, Calee, Sarah and myself practiced making a social story to teach a student to reduce the amount of time she spent gazing in a mirror. The process of accomplishing this task sounds tremendous but it actually was very quick to complete. Anyone in the teaching profession knows how busy a day it is fulfilling all the adaptations, lesson planning, committee meetings, etc. that take place. I was pleased and amazed at how quickly such a movie making task could be and because of this, I am eager to include movie making tasks in my grade 3 class for language arts activities such as reader's theatre and role playing for Health outcomes.
